Leeward Community College provides Homestay Placements for our international students throught the Office of International Programs.  Students need to fill out and submit the HOMESTAY REQUEST FORM along with the homestay placement fee.  For students wishing to live in an apartment or room rental rather than a homestay we provide a list of housing available to students.  Please see the question and answer section below for more information or contact us at international [at] lcc [dot] hawaii [dot] edu

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

What are the housing options at Leeward Community College?

There are three housing options for students attending Leeward Community College:

Option A:  HOMESTAY WITH MEALS.  Upon submission of the Leeward Community College HOMESTAY REQUEST FORM students will be placed in a home with a local family.  The homestay family will provide 7 breakfasts and 5 dinners per week.  The student will be responsible for their own lunches.

Option B:  HOMESTAY WITHOUT MEALS.    Upon submission of the Leeward Community College HOMESTAY REQUEST FORM students will be placed in a home with a local family.  The student is given kitchen privileges and is responsible for purchasing their own food and cooking their own meals.

Option C: APARTMENT OR ROOM RENTALS.  Students rent their own off campus housing (private apartment or room rentals).  The Office of International Programs has a list of available rentals, but this is referral only and we do not screen the homes or the families.

How much do homestays cost?

Option A:  HOMESTAY WITH MEALS is $800.00 USD per month.

Option B:  HOMESTAY WITHOUT MEALS is $650.00 USD  per month

Option C: APARTMENT OR ROOM RENTAL costs vary according to location and amenities.

How do I pay the homestay costs?

Each month, the student pays the Homestay family directly.  Payment is due upon arrival and on the same day of the month each following month.

What are the rules when staying with a homestay family?

Each family will have rules that need to be followed.  The rules will vary, depending on the family.  While students are often treated as "one of the family", you must always remember that you are a guest in the home.  Students will always be expected to do their own laundry and keep their bedroom and bathroom neat and tidy.  In addition, you may be asked to assist in some household chores, such as taking out the garage and helping with dishes.  The family will have its own rules concerning bringing guests into the home, smoking, drinking, noise, etc.  This will be discussed and agreed upon when you arrive.

How much interaction will I have with a homestay family?

The amount of interaction with the homestay family depends on the family.  Families in the United States can be very busy and meal time is often the only time of day families will spend together.  If the family is providing meals to you (Option A) you will be expected to join them for the meals.  You should be willing to offer help when needed.  Families may invite you to join them on family outings or they may give you a great deal of independence.

What do I do if I want to move out into my own apartment?

Homestay agreements are month to month.  If and when you plan to move, it is recommended that you plan accordingly, as partial month stays will not be refunded.  You should give 30 days notice to your homestay family if you intend to move out.

Will my homestay family pick me up from the airport when I arrive to the U.S.?

Yes.  Your homestay family will pick you up at the Honolulu Airport. The Office of Interanational Programs will provide the family with the arrival flight information and confirm that they will pick you up.

Is there a homestay placement fee?

Yes.  You are required to pay $200 USD to be placed in a homestay.  This placement fee can be paid by credit card on the HOMESTAY REQUEST FORM that submitted to the LCC International Programs Office at least two months prior to the start of your program.
