What's Happening at LCCW

First Annual Community Open House a Success!

Leeward Community College-Wai‘anae Education Center held its first annual Community Open House on Tuesday March 24th. The Open House was open to Wai‘anae Coast residents and anyone else interested in finding out what LCC-Wai‘anae has to offer.

Leeward CC-Wai‘anae Education Center is growing in many ways - more students, additional faculty and staff, and a greater variety of courses and programs. Attendees experienced our vibrant and supportive environment and heard from students about the high quality education they receive at LCC-W.

Highlights from the event included the opening ‘oli (chanted by Walterbea Aldeguer and her granddaughter Porsha), a student art demonstration (given by Dr. Gladys De Barcza's art class), and a student ‘ukulele performance (given by Kumu Dreena Kane's ‘ukulele class).

We also had presentations by the Teacher Education, the Hawaiian Studies, and the Digital Media programs, as well as from the Ka Lama Education Academy, MA‘O Farms, and Wai`anae Health Academy (our community partners).

In addition, our staff provided workshops on applying to college, applying for financial aid, and completing the college placement testing.

Over 75 people attended this event and enjoyed the food, fun, and informative presentations. We look forward to holding this event again next year!

Work with Partners

The staff at LCC-W has been working closely with our community partners to coordinate and improve student services to the students in their programs. Our community partners are Ka Lama Education Academy, Wai‘anae Health Academy, and MA‘O Farms. Each partner organization recruits students to enroll in LCC for degree or certificate programs in teacher education, health careers and health-related business, and sustainable agriculture. Many of the courses they take are offered at the LCC-W campus. Our staff works with these students, as with all students who attend classes at LCC-W, to provide support services, including Compass testing, financial aid counseling, academic advising, and tutoring.

We continue to seek out new community partners to work collaboratively to increase the educational program opportunities for Wai‘anae Coast students.
