HERE'S MORE INFORMATION ABOUT WORLDQUEST
WHAT IS WORLDQUEST?
• Academic WorldQuest is a Program of the National World Affairs Council which is a private, non-profit organization that promotes increased understanding of world affairs.
• The WorldQuest game was invented by the World Affairs Council and first played in the year 2003 in Washington DC. Currently it is played at various academic levels across the United States. This (Nov. 2007) is the 2nd time it is being played at the College level in the State of Hawaii.
WHY IS WORLD QUEST IMPORTANT?
• A college education entails more than acquiring skills for a job after graduation.
College should also entail the creation of, or at least the fostering of, good citizenship. Citizenship not only of the State of Hawaii and of the United States of America but also citizenship of the World. What the world needs today is globally minded citizens. People should be aware not only of the major events that are happening in the world, but they should also be aware of some cultural, philosophical, and historical background of the conflicts and issues that we face. By being better informed we become more tolerant, and understanding, and thus more capable of resolving problems.
HOW IS THE WORLDQUEST GAME PLAYED?
• The game is a contest between teams of one to four students representing community college campuses throughout the state.
• Teams compete by answering rounds of questions projected by PowerPoint onto a screen. This year the questions will test their knowledge of current events in Asia and the Pacific, famous women in history, geography of Africa, and ancient and modern history.
• Nearly 100 community college students across the state participated.
• There will be a total of 50 questions, 5 rounds of 10 questions. The winning team was the one with the highest number of correct answers.
• Members of the first, second, and third place teams each received prizes valued at $100, $50 and $25 respectively.
